Mary's Story: The Invitation

When I was 28, my long-time college friend, Janna, whom I was visiting for the day, let me read 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter, from her Living Bible. It really spoke to me personally. Then she told me of a discussion she had had with her friend Meg, who had said, "You may think have been a Christian for a long time, but you need to invite Jesus into your heart." Janna thought about this for a while then asked Jesus into her heart. That day I pondered Janna's story. Sometime very shortly afterward, when I was sitting alone in my car, I said, "Jesus, I don't understand why I need to do this, but I ask You into my heart." It was not a very gracious invitation. Even so, Jesus honored that. Right away I had this intense desire to read the Bible. I read the TEV version, then the King James and the Living Bible New Testament.

A few months later, after my second son had been born shortly before Easter, I had just finished feeding him and was sitting at the kitchen table looking out the back window. It was about two in the morning. I had been reading and thinking about the Easter story. And it hit me: Jesus is alive! The reality of that hit me full force. Ever since that moment, I have been trying to know Him better and to let His Holy Spirit guide and strengthen me. I want to honor Him. I ask the Lord to let His love shine through me to draw others to Him.
